Here at Troop 1776 we like to keep our Scoutmaster position and our Committee Chair position to 3 year terms. It is now time to elect a new Scoutmaster.

Why Become a Scoutmaster?

Because Someone Believed in You. Now You Can Believe in Them.– Every Scout deserves an adult who sees something in them that they may not yet see in themselves. Someone who says, “You can do this.” Someone who challenges them to try again when they fail, encourages them to step up when they are afraid, and congratulates them when they achieve what they thought they couldn’t.

You Have the Chance to Change a Life – You may never know exactly when it happens. It might be around a campfire when a Scout finally opens up about something that’s bothering them. It might be on a difficult hike when they discover they are stronger than they thought. It might be when they stand in front of their patrol for the first time and realize that even though they were scared they were able to lead. To us these moments seem miniscule but to a scout they can be life changing. These are the moments that we all remember

Help Them Become Who They Are Meant to Be – Scouting isn’t about creating perfect young people. It’s about giving them opportunities to grow. They learn to lead, to serve, to make decisions, accept responsibility, solve problems, work as a team, and keep going when things get difficult. Most importantly, they learn that they can achieve things they thought they couldn’t. The Scoutmasters job isn’t to walk the trail for them or do the merit badges for them. The Scoutmasters job is to show them they can achieve it themselves.

Give Them Adventure—and Something More – Here at Troop 1776, we like to call ourselves the High Adventure Troop. We like to show them there is more to life than what’s on the screen. Every outdoor adventure is a teaching moment in its own. Camping in the rain teaches resilience. Mountain trails teach perseverance. Campfires teach connection. Service projects teach community and compassion. Mistakes teach responsibility. Successful adventures teach confidence. All these experiences turn into lessons—and these lessons build character. And while you’re helping these Scouts discover the world, you may discover something about yourself, too.

Lead by Letting Them Lead – One of the best things Scouting offers a Scout, is the opportunity to lead. The Scoutmaster doesn’t need to have the loudest voice or the most experience. Instead, you create the space for Scouts to make decisions, take responsibility, learn from their mistakes, and discover what leadership really means. We like to say that we give them a safe place to fail. Sometimes this leadership means stepping forward, sometimes it means listening, sometimes it means helping someone else succeed. You get to help them learn all of it.

Your Time Can Become Their Memories – Years from now, Scouts may not remember every meeting or every lesson. But they will remember the people who were there. They will remember the adults who believed in them. They will remember the nights around the campfire, the laughter in the rain, the challenges they overcame, the friends they made, and the moments when someone told them, “I’m proud of you.” You have the opportunity to become part of those memories. And those memories can become part of who they are.

You Don’t Have to Be Perfect – You don’t need to know every knot. You don’t need to be an expert outdoorsman. You don’t need to have all the answers. You simply need to care enough to show up. The skills can be learned. Training is available. Other volunteers will help. What cannot be taught is the willingness to invest in someone else’s future. That starts with you.

Leave Something Behind – Most of us hope that, in some small way, we will leave the world better than we found it. Being a Scoutmaster gives you a remarkable opportunity to do that. It isn’t simply a volunteer position. It is an opportunity to shape lives, build character, and leave a legacy that can last long after your time in Scouting is over.

My challenge to you is ……. can you be the sounding board and the guiding light that helps our kids become the great leader that we are know they can be.
