February 2026 Campout

Camping at Blackland Prairie Raptor Center

I.          Campout Theme:

          Raptor Education and Conservation, We are going to doing their Live Raptor Program, We will be given a guided trail walk and have the opportunity to help with some conservation work. They are also going to be providing Smores over the Campfire!

II.        Departure Time and Place:

We will meet at the church at 6:00 pm and plan to depart at 6:30. The drive will be about 30 min. to the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center address is 1625 Brockdale Park Rd, Lucas, TX 75002.

III.      Camp

We will camping in the Red Tailed Hawk Camping area.

IV.       Transportation: 

We will travel by car to this campout.

V.        Return Time: 

Our goal is to depart Blackland Prairie Raptor Center by 8:30 A.M. We should return to the Otto Middle School area around 9 a.m.

VI.      Food: 

Patrols / Scouts will be Meal Planning for the entire weekend. This is a great weekend to get all your cooking and meal planning done for your rank advancements.

  • Saturday morning- hot breakfast
  • Saturday lunch – hot or cold lunch
  • Saturday dinner- Hot meal
  • Sunday breakfast- Breakfast provided by the Raptor Center

VII.    Personal Equipment List:

Necessary Gear:

  • Class A uniform
  • Raingear
  • Heavy Jacket
  • Closed Toed shoes or Hiking Boots
  • Troop Hat
  • 2 sets of shorts or pants
  • 2 shirts (class B or equivalent)
  • 3 sets of underwear
  • 3 pairs of socks 
  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag, (will be 60’s during day and high 40’s at night)
  • Sleeping pad
  • Day Pack for Hiking
  • Mess Kit
  • Spork or spoon
  • Flashlight/Headlamp with extra batteries
  • 1-liter Personal Water bottle
  • Trash bags
  • Personal first aid kit
  • Towel
  • SUNSCREEN!

 Recommended Gear:

  • Extra pair of shoes (lightweight)
  • Toiletries/Personal hygiene items
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen

Optional Gear:

  • Camera 
  • Camp stool or camp chair
  • Lip Balm

VIII.    Cost: 

  • The only cost for this campout will be for the Patrol food.

IX.       Weather:

Highs in the upper 60’s and lows in the upper 40’s.

Friday, February 20th, 2026

  • 6:30 pm. – Departure
  • 7:00 pm. – Arrive at Blackland Prairie Raptor Center
  • 10:30 pm. – Lights out

Saturday, February 21st, 2026

  • 6:30 am. – Reveille
  • 7:30 am. – Breakfast
  • 8-11:00 pm – Conservation Project
  • 12:00 pm. Lunch
  • 1:00 pm. – Live Raptor Program
  • 6:00 pm. – Dinner
  • 8:30 pm. – Campfire and Program
  • 10:30 pm. – Lights out

Sunday, February 22nd, 2026

  • 7:00 am. – Reveille
  • 8:30 am. – Breakfast Provided by the Raptor Center
  • 9-9:30 pm. – Arrive at Otto

NOTES ON TRIP

The scouts will have the opportunity to learn and see a lot of our local Raptors. We will have a Live Raptor Program with a guided hike as well as an opportunity for some Conservation work at the center. This will help us with our upcoming Bird Study Merit Badge.

FOOD: We will be doing a meal planning meeting, and the patrols will be cooking the entire weekend. I expect the scouts to all fully participate in this endeavor and not leave it up to one person.

GEAR CARRYING: The normal camp gear will be needed, a tent, day pack, water bottles. We will be bringing the trailer for this campout.

DANGEROUS PLANTS/ ANIMALS/ REPTILES AND INSECTS:

  • Plants are Poison Ivy, Sumac and Oak
  • Reptiles are Rattlesnakes, Copperheads, Water Moccasins and Coral Snakes
  • Insects are Black Widow Spider, Brown Recluse Spider, Fire Ants, Scorpions and Wasps.
