October Campout Big Bend National Park

I. Campout Theme:

4 Day Campout at Big Bend National Park backpacking and hiking.

II. Departure Time and Place:

Meet at church at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct 9th, 2026.  Depart at 6:30 p.m. Sharp. Travel time to our layover will be roughly 4hrs 30 min.

III. Camp

We will leave there Sat morning and finish the drive to Big Bend National Park. We will be staying at the Rio Grande Village Group Campground campsite D. https://maps.app.goo.gl/D5hyaKTrBAZVtnyY9

IV. Transportation:

We will travel by car for this campout. We will not be taking the Troop Trailer

V. Return Time:

Our goal is to depart Big Bend National Park by 7am and arrive at Otto Middle School by 7:30pm. 

VI. Food:

Scouts should eat before departing on Friday.  We will be eating and cooking as a troop for this campout. We will be camping for 4 days so there will be 3 hot dinners, 3 lunches, and 4 breakfasts. Scouts will need to bring money for food and snacks during the travel there and back.

VII. Personal Equipment List:

Necessary Gear:

  • A Great Attitude!!!!
  • Class A uniform
  • Raingear
  • Light Jacket
  • Hiking Boots
  • Troop Hat
  • 4 sets of shorts or pants
  • 4 shirts (class B or equivalent)
  • 5 sets of underwear
  • 5 pairs of socks 
  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag, (will be upper 70’s during day and upper 50’s at night)
  • Sleeping pad
  • Day Pack for Hiking
  • Spork or spoon
  • Flashlight/Headlamp with extra batteries
  • Personal Water bottle minimum 5–6 liters per person is required for the backpackers
  • Trash bags
  • Personal first aid kit
  • Towel
  • SUNSCREEN!

Recommended Gear:

  • Sunglasses    
  • Toiletries/Personal hygiene items
  • Sunscreen!!!  

Optional Gear:

  • Camp stool or camp chair                
  • Lip Balm               
  • Camera

VIII.  Cost:

The only cost for this campout will be for food.

Highs in the high 70s and lows in the upper 50s.

  • 6:00 Meet at CCPC
  • 6:30 Departure from CCPC Church
  • 11-11;30 arrive at Camp Thomas
  • 12:30 Lights out

Saturday, Oct 10th, 2026

  • 6:00 – Reveille
  • 7:00 – Grab and Go Breakfast and head to Big Bend National Park
  • 12:00 – Lunch and arrive at Big Bend National Park
  • 6:30 – Hot Dinner
  • 8:00 – Prepare for Hiking overnight
  • 10:00 – Lights out

Sunday, Oct 11th, 2026

  • 6:00 – Reveille
  • 7:00 – Breakfast
  • 10:00 – On Trail
  • 12:00 – Lunch
  • 3:00 – arrive at campsite (for the backpackers)
  • 6:30 – Dinner in Camp
  • 11:00 – Lights out

  • 6:00 – Reveille
  • 7:00 – Breakfast
  • 10:00 – On Trail
  • 12:00 – Lunch
