October Campout 11th-14th Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Peak Hike

We are headed back to Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Peak they are both amazing natural attractions that offer breathtaking experiences for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Carlsbad Caverns, located in New Mexico, is renowned for its stunning underground limestone formations, vast cave systems, and bat flights. Meanwhile, the Guadalupe Peak hike, situated in Texas, offers a challenging yet rewarding trek to the highest point in Texas, providing hikers with panoramic views of the surrounding desert and mountains. This will be an amazing trip that you will talk about for a long time.

October Campout 11th-14th Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Peak hike

I. Campout Theme:

Caving at Carlsbad Caverns and Hiking Guadeloupe Peak Trail

II. Departure Time and Place:

Meet at church at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct 11th, 2024.  Depart at 6:30 p.m. Sharp.

III. Camp

Friday night we will be camping at Camp Tonkawa in Tuscola, Tx., Saturday night we will be camping at Dowling Aquatic Base in Carlsbad NM and Sunday night we will be camping at the Group Campsites at Guadalupe Mountains National Park at the base of the Guadalupe Peak Trail

IV. Transportation:

We will travel by car for this campout.

V. Return Time:

Our goal is to depart Guadalupe Mountains National Park 8 am at the latest.  We should return to Otto Middle School around 6-6:30 p.m.. 

VI. Food:

Scouts should eat before departing on Friday.  We will be eating and cooking as a troop for this campout. We will be doing Grab and Go breakfasts, sack lunches with dinners in town.

VII. Personal Equipment List:

Necessary Gear:

  • A Great Attitude!!!!
  • Class A uniform
  • Raingear
  • Light Jacket- It will be cold in the Caverns and can get cold on the Mountain Top.
  • Closed Toed shoes or Hiking Boots
  • Troop Hat
  • 3 sets of shorts or pants
  • 3 shirts (class B or equivalent)
  • 4 sets of underwear
  • 4 pairs of socks 
  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag, (will be upper 70’s during day and lower 60’s at night)
  • Sleeping pad
  • Day Pack for Hiking
  • Spork or spoon
  • Flashlight/Headlamp with extra batteries
  • 2(1-liter) Personal Water bottles
  • Trash bags
  • Personal first aid kit
  • Towel
  • SUNSCREEN!

Recommended Gear:

  • Sunglasses    
  • Toiletries/Personal hygiene items
  • Sunscreen!!!  

Optional Gear:

  • Camp stool or camp chair                
  • Lip Balm               
  • Camera

VIII.  Cost:

The only cost for this campout will be for food.

Highs in the high 70s and lows in the 60s.

  • 6:00 Meet at CCPC
  • 6:30 Departure from CCPC Church
  • 10:00-10:45 arrive at Camp Tonkawa
  • 12:00 Lights out

Saturday, Oct 12th, 2024 (Sunrise 6:48, Sunset 8:12)

  • 6:00—Reveille
  • 7:00—Depart for Carlsbad Caverns
  • 12:00—Arrive at Carlsbad Caverns and eat lunch
  • 1:15-2:15-Must start cave tour between this time
  • 5:30—
  • 6:30 – Dinner
  • 9:00– Arrive at Dowling Aquatics Base
  • 10:30–Lights out

Sunday, Oct 13th, 2024

  • 7:00 – Reveille
  • 8:00 – Leave for Guadalupe Mountains National Park
  • 10:00–Start time for our Guadalupe Peak hike.
  • 12:00–Lunch on the trail
  • 4:00-6:00–Camping at the Group Campsites at the base of the Trail Head.
  • 7:30–Dinner in Camp
  • 10:30–Lights out

Monday, October 14th, 2024

  • 6:00–Reveille
  • 8:00–Depart for Otto Middle School
  • 5:00– Arrive at Otto Middle School

  • From Camp Tonkawa to Carlsbad Caverns- 5-6 hrs
  • From Carlsbad Caverns to Dowling Aquatic Camp, 205 S James St, Carlsbad NM( dinner and camping)- 40-60min
  • Dowling Aquatic Camp to Guadalupe Peak Trail head 400 Pine Canyon Dr, Salt Flat, Tx- 1hr
  • Guadalupe National Park to Otto Middle School- 8-9.5hrs
